Expanded Mental Health Support Now Available for Minnesota Farm Families

New providers strengthen mental health outreach for farmers and rural communities across Minnesota

Farming is more than a profession — it’s a way of life filled with both reward and pressure. Recognizing the ongoing need to support the mental health of Minnesota’s agricultural communities, Region Five Development Commission (R5DC) has expanded its Agricultural Mental Health and Wellness Program with the addition of two new providers: Tracie Rutherford Self and Jennifer Vaughn. They join long-standing provider Monica McConkey, who has served in this role since 2019.

These professionals will serve farmers, families, employees, and agricultural advisors across Minnesota, offering free, confidential support tailored to the specific stressors of rural life and work in agriculture.

Meet the Providers

Tracie Rutherford Self

With more than 25 years of experience, Tracie specializes in trauma, stress, and suicide prevention. Raised in West Virginia and grounded in Midwest farm culture, she collaborates closely with farmers and first responders to deliver practical mental health support in rural settings.

Jennifer Vaughn

Jennifer has been providing mental health services in rural communities since 2009. Her work includes supporting individuals, couples, and families through a wide range of experiences. She brings a deep understanding of the complexities farm families face.

Monica McConkey

A licensed counselor with over 30 years in rural mental health, Monica was raised on a farm and understands the unique pressures faced by those in agriculture. She continues to provide critical support to farmers, their families, and industry partners across the state.

Free, Confidential, and Accessible

Agricultural mental health professionals offer flexible options — from single sessions to ongoing support — at no cost to the client. Whether navigating stress, isolation, or major life transitions, their goal is to help individuals build healthy coping strategies and reduce the stigma around seeking help.

This expansion is made possible through partnerships with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and the Minnesota State Agricultural Centers of Excellence: AgCentric (Northern) and the Southern Agricultural Center of Excellence.
